Itinerary
Upon your arrival at the Deauville-Trouville train station, we’ll pick you up to transfer you directly to your first hotel in Honfleur. Honfleur is known for its old, beautiful picturesque port, characterized by houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including Claude Monet, as part of the Honfleur School, which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. The Sainte-Catherine church, which has a bell tower separate from the principal building, is the largest church made out of wood in France.…. Our Trip Manager will spend a little bit of time with you to go over your trip package and check the bike fitting, and then leave you to your explorations. Dinner is included this evening.
Say goodbye to Honfleur this morning. Your ride takes you along the coast, passing great examples of Anglo-Norman architecture, as you ride into the twin seaside resort towns of Trouville and Deauville. Trouville duals as a working fishing port, while Deauville is France’s northern version of Cannes, attracting celebrities, the well-to-do, and even a popular American film festival. Continue further, parallel to the coast, and into Cabourg at the end of the ride. This lovely seaside resort was essentially “invented” by a Paris financier in the 1800s, when he converted a small fishing village into today’s picturesque seaside holiday destination. Another delicious dinner awaits you this evening.
Your ride today brings you away from the coast following the Canal of Caen, to Benouville and Pegasus Bridge, (originally the Benouville Bridge). There you can visit the Pegasus Memorial and Museum, dedicated to the first liberators who arrived in Normandy on the night of 5th/6th June 1944. Decide if you want to do the option to Ouistreham where you can visit the Atlantic Wall Museum, inside the “Big Bunker”, a former German headquarters. The Belvedere has an interesting orientation table and in front of the casino you can visit the Landing museum. The route brings you into the centre of Caen for the night, home of the WWII Peace Memorial, which we highly recommend.
Today’s ride heads towards the coastline again, bringing you to Arromanches and Gold Beach, where you can visit an unusual circular theatre with a D-Day film shown on nine screens. In the D-Day Landing Museum learn about the construction and operation of the artificial harbours assembled in the days following D-Day. Your goal today is Bayeux, a beautiful medieval town with many sites, including the not-to-be-missed Bayeux Tapestry. This 70 metre long tapestry, a real historic document recounting events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in the 11thcentury, is unique in the world. You can also enjoy the recently re-opened Battle of Normandy Museum and General de Gaulle Memorial. Another dinner awaits you this evening, at one of our favourite restaurants.
A final loop ride today, taking you from Bayeux to discover some of the most famous WWII sites in the area. Head westwards parallel to the coast bringing you by the end of the morning to Omaha Beach and Colleville-sur-Mer. In Colleville take some time to visit the incredibly moving US Military Memorial with the cemetery, the chapel and then a little further on a memorial dedicated to the youth of America. There is also a viewpoint which overlooks Omaha Beach, which you will have pedaled to just before. Afterwards, a luscious ride along quiet countryside roads, dotted with villages, including Trevieres with its wide open square (and where you can find lunch). Upon your return to Bayeux, enjoy your final evening, and raise a glass as a celebration to your week of explorations.
After your breakfast this morning, say goodbye to Normandy – you are headed on the local train to Brittany and the spectacular Mont Saint Michel. Upon your arrival at Pontorson train station we transfer you to your hotel. From there, it is an easy walk, or short ride on the free shuttle along the passerelle out to the Mont itself for explorations. This island-village has since the eighth century AD been the seat of the monastery from which it draws its name. Its unique position (an island only 600 metres from land) made it readily accessible at low tide to the many pilgrims to its abbey. This position made it readily defensible as an incoming tide stranded, or drowned, would-be assailants. By capitalizing on this natural defense, the Mont remained unconquered during the Hundred Years’ War. The reverse benefits of this characteristic were not lost on Louis XI, who turned the Mont into a prison. Before your dinner, our bike provider in Brittany will bring you your bikes for the next stage of your tour.
Your route today is a little long, but the mix of very flat terrain and long stretches on great bike paths make the kilometres disappear quickly. In fact, the only “bump” you’ll see all day long is the incongruous Mont Saint Dol – a geological oddity poking up in the middle of the coastal flats. You can detour up to the top of the hill for some fantastic views of the region, and to touch the Devil’s Stone of regional legends. The end of the ride brings you along the famous sillon seaside boardwalk into the walled port city of St Malo, renowned for its pirate history, and brought to life in the book (and more recently, popular miniseries) All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr. Enjoy the long sandy beaches contrasted with the tiny cobblestoned streets wedged between high, protective walls in your explorations.
A great loop ride awaits you today, taking you along the Emerald Coast to the picturesque fishing port of Cancale. Many of Cancale’s visitors are drawn by its reputation as the “oyster capital” of Brittany. History has it that Louis XIV had his oysters brought to Versailles from Cancale. Centuries later, the farming of oysters is still a major activity in the port and there are oyster beds covering about 7.3 square kilometres easily seen from the pier at the harbour. These beds harvest about 25,000 tons of oysters each year. Though a small town, it is well served by a large number of restaurants, many specialising in seafood. When not eating one can sit and watch the bustle of this busy little town with many stalls selling crustaceans of all types. After your stop there, continue along the coast to the Pointe du Grouin with views across the bay back towards Mont Saint-Michel. Continue, hugging the coast for much of the return ride, past the Rothenuef Sculpted rocks, and the Arboulet Fort, back to St Malo for a second night.
A shorter ride awaits you for your final day, allowing you time for exploring Dinan itself at the end of the day. This ride is great, starting with a short taxi-boat ride across the bay between Saint Malo and Dinard, to rest your legs from pedaling! We recommend you take some time to explore Dinard before setting out; the town was first settled by Saint-Malo’s shipping merchants who built some of the town’s magnificent manor houses, several of which survive. In the late 19th century American and British aristocrats made Dinard popular as a fashionable summer resort, and they built stunning villas on the cliff tops and exclusive hotels on the seafront during the French “Belle Époque”. A fantastic bike path takes your from there up along the Rance River Valley all the wat to medieval Dinan. Once there, wander through the twisting streets, admiring the many old buildings, some of which date from the 13th century. Be sure to see the Jacobins Theatre, built in the year 1224, as well as the Gothic Flamboyant St Malo’s Church, the Romanesque Saint Saviour’s Basilica, and the Chateau of Dinan.
After a final breakfast, you can get connections out of Dinan train station to return to Paris or for further travels. Bon Voyage!
